EU wants to regain benefits in the Ukraine peace agreement
On September 7 (local time) the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs Policy, Ms. Kaja Kallas, said that Europe should not make concessions without receiving corresponding benefits in any peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine
Speaking in Lithuania, Ms. Kallas said that Russia and Ukraine eventually need to have direct dialogue. According to her, the EU cannot act as a mediator because the bloc has always sided with Ukraine and does not maintain a neutral position.
She also noted that any future peace agreement will set many demands on Europe. Therefore, Europe should not accept those demands without receiving anything in return.
16 sailors evacuated from oil tanker attacked in Hormuz
On the same day, TASS quoted Oman News Agency (ONA) as saying that the country’s authorities had evacuated 16 sailors from the Saudi Arabian-flagged oil tanker Sidr after the ship was attacked while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
An Oman ship brought 16 crew members ashore and they received medical support. There were a total of 25 people on board, including 2 crew members who died.
On September 2, Saudi Arabia‘s national shipping company Bahri confirmed that 2 Filipino sailors were killed in an incident related to the Sidr ship while the ship was passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to ONA, the crude oil tanker was shot off off the northeastern coast of Oman.
Finland completes 200km long fence on Russian border
TASS quoted a statement from the Finnish Border Guard Force as saying that the country has completed the construction of a 200km long fence along the border with Russia.
The project has been implemented since 2024, with an estimated cost of 365 million euros (about 423.9 million USD), including a 4.5m high fence, accompanying road system and technical monitoring equipment.
Hundreds of Finnish businesses participate in the project. At times, up to 600 people and 150 machines work at the construction sites every day.
The head of the Finnish Border Guard, Markku Hassinen, said that the fence helps strengthen border surveillance, raise awareness of the situation and improve the mobility of the patrol force.
