Homer Gere has very good hair. Anyone who’s been watching The Shards already knows. In Ryan Murphy’s extremely horny adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel, the 26-year-old plays mysterious new kid Robert Mallory and spends most of the show with his naturally curly hair slicked aaall the way back. It’s all very 1981 (and it’s also very Richard Gere, his dad, FYI). But IRL, Gere Jr is doing something a little different with it.
At a US Open exhibition match event yesterday, the actor pushed his curls back from his face and he left one single strand deliberately dangling over his forehead. Fresh off Spain’s World Cup win, Ferran Torres celebrated with one hanging over his forehead. Off Campus’ Belmont Cameli has got involved. Even Theo James had one on the cover of British GQ. And Gere’s is basically the perfect example of why the whole thing works.
Unlike Torres, who had to coax a straight piece of hair into position, Gere already has a head full of curls to work with. Rather than letting all of them fall forward, though, he’s kept almost everything off his face and allowed just one little wisp to escape. The sunnies help hold everything else in place—extremely low effort but extremely effective. If you’ve got naturally curly hair, it’s also pretty easy to copy.
Work a small amount of styling cream or light-hold gel through damp hair, push the fringe back with your fingers rather than combing it completely flat, then pull one curl forward while everything’s still slightly wet. Let it dry naturally and, crucially, leave the rogue bit alone. You want one curl, not an entire fringe. Which means the forehead curl club has another member. And considering Homer Gere had an entire head of them to choose from, he picked a very good one.
