Reed Hastings Has a Simple Trick for Explaining Complex Ideas

In the age of AI, everything is getting more complex. That’s why it pays to learn from entrepreneurs who have mastered the art of making complicated ideas simple.

Netflix co-founder and former CEO Reed Hastings has more than 30 years of experience communicating big ideas to customers and stakeholders with different levels of knowledge about streaming and commerce. Today, as a board member for the AI giant, Anthropic, Hastings uses the communication skills he’s refined over decades to help explain today’s most profound technological innovation — artificial intelligence.

In a recent interview on the leadership-focused podcast The CEO Signal, Hastings covered questions ranging from AI to leadership strategy. Hastings used a timeless communication tactic to get his points across. He calls it a shortcut — connect complex ideas to something your audience already knows. In other words, simple analogies.

Here are four examples of communication shortcuts Hastings used in just one interview.

1. Build a team, not a family.

Hastings said that building a great team starts

Hastings said that building a great team starts with a “great metaphor.” The metaphor — or comparison — he offered was to think of a company “like a team, not a family.”

Hastings explained that, while many companies like to say they’re like family, a better analogy is to compare a company to a professional sports team.

“It’s a great metaphor because people respect teams and they respect families, but if you describe your company as a family, you’d better not do a layoff,” he explained. “You wouldn’t lay off two of your kids, would you?”
