There’s a number that decides whether you own a business or just hold an expensive job, and almost no one calculates it. Owners track revenue, margin, maybe EBITDA. The number that actually matters never appears on the statements, because it measures the one thing accounting assumes away: you.

I spent fifteen years in institutional finance (Vanguard, Goldman, and State Street) and a decade after that buying and operating small businesses. The finance years turned out to be more useful than I expected, but not for the reasons anyone tells you. They gave me a way to measure the thing every operator feels and no one prices.

I call it owner beta.

What is beta?

In markets, beta measures how much a stock moves when the market moves. Borrow the idea. Owner beta measures how much your business moves when you move. Cut your hours in half for a month and watch profit. If profit falls by half, your owner beta is about 1.0. The business is just a mirror of your effort, and you own it the way a reflection owns you. If profit barely flinches, your beta is near zero, and you own something real: an asset that pays whether or not you show up.
