It’s time for a little conference action for area prep football teams as Week 3 hits Friday night in Indiana.
As far as our staff predictions last week, content coach Austin Hough and Kyle Smedley each went 16-3. I was a pedestrian 14-5. Hough is now 30-5 through two weeks with Smedley and myself each at 28-7.
The local schedule for Friday night sees defending league champions Penn and Mishawaka each begin pursuits of another title.
The Kingsmen, who won the Northern Indiana Conference yet again a season ago at 7-0, will play South Bend Riley at Jackson Field. Penn looked every bit the part of a team last week that will be making a lot of noise come season’s end in the Class 6A state tournament. Led by confident quarterback Landon Hall, the Kingsmen dominated host Mishawaka for a 49-7 win to move to 2-0. Penn, which won a 6A sectional title in 2025, has scored 98 points in its first two wins.
The Cavemen, now 1-1, will attempt to bounce back with a home game versus Plymouth. Coach Keith Kinder’s team won the Northern Lakes Conference crown at 7-0 in 2025. The Cavemen beat Plymouth 28-0 a season ago. The Rockies are 1-1 under interim coach Brent Corbett after a 35-0 win over Lakeland last week.
Northridge opens NLC play at Goshen in a matchup of two of the four new coaches in the NLC this fall. The Raiders beat Columbia City 35-34 in their home debut under coach Luke Amstutz to move to 2-0. Rising star Jake Scholl was again the man of the night for the Raiders versus No. 10 Columbia City. The sophomore quarterback hit Keivontre Copeland with a 40-yard touchdown toss with 1:53 to play to tie the game. Eli Stec’s PAT put the Raiders on top 35-34 and Columbia City missed a game-winning 45-yard field goal try.
Scholl ran for 197 yards and two scores and passed for 156 yards and one touchdown in the win over the Eagles. He totaled eight touchdowns, including five rushing, in Week 1 as the Raiders set a single-game scoring record by thrashing West Noble 62-32.
The RedHawks throttled South Bend Washington 59-0 last week to give former Warsaw assistant coach Griffin Heckaman his first win in the Maple City.
