It’s only Kendall Jenner’s second time in the city of Venice—and her first at the Venice Film Festival. When Vogue catches up with her, she has barely had time to settle in: she landed the previous day and will be gone again by morning. First, though, there is a dress to put on and a debut festival carpet to walk. “I’m excited to throw my dress on and go do the carpet later,” she says, fanning herself in an attempt to stay cool in the stifling Italian heat.
Jenner is heading to the premiere of Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, which stars John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits, and Parker Posey and is competing for the Golden Lion. She is in town with Armani Beauty, having become the face of Emporio Armani’s Power of You fragrance earlier this year. “I love working with Armani,” she says. “They are so sweet, and everything is always just so fun and easy.” Later, she steps out on the red carpet in a delicately beaded, shimmering gold floral Armani fall 1995 gown and Briony Raymond diamond earrings.
Her hair, in a zig-zag parting, cascades in soft, glossy waves. Venice already comes with its own rather romantic Jenner family association. Her first visit, last summer, was for a wedding, and Kylie Jenner came as her date. “It was just like we were on just a million dates together in Venice,” she remembers. “So I’d say now, Venice reminds me of Kylie, which is really sweet.

Scent, it turns out, is also something Jenner associates with the women in her family. Fragrance is the final consideration in her everyday getting-ready routine. “At the end of getting dressed, I’m like, ‘Who am I today?
What scent am I today?’” she says. “I’m a little bit of a snob about it too. I’m super picky about my scents.”
Power of You—a gourmand fragrance built around maracuja, frangipani, and vanilla bourbon—has duly made the cut. And Jenner has a particular technique when it comes to application. “I’m mostly a chest sprayer,” she says. It dawns on her in real time, as we speak: “I feel like that was my mom as well.
I remember seeing her doing this, so I think maybe that’s why I ended up that way.” Another beauty trick, inherited from Kris Jenner. The fragrance’s name prompts a bigger question: what does power actually look like to Kendall Jenner now? Increasingly, she says, it is about knowing herself. “As you get older, you discover more parts of yourself,” she says. Personal style has played a major role in that process.
Finding my style and finding out what makes

After more than a decade of being dressed and photographed professionally, Jenner has a pleasingly uncomplicated perspective. “I love getting dressed. I love dressing myself. I love having fun with it,” she says. “That’s definitely been a part of my growing-into-my-power journey.”
This summer has afforded her some time to do things at a slightly slower pace, including reading: Jenner is known as a voracious reader.
Currently in her travel bag is Ann Napolitano’s Hello Beautiful, pressed into her hands—figuratively—by a friend with whom she has an excellent birthday tradition. “She’ll collect 10 books she read over the year and give them to me,” Jenner says. “A lot of my book collection has grown via her.”
She has also been hunting down old editions of Walt Whitman. After watching the new documentary Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World, in which Oliver’s admiration for Whitman is explored, Jenner realized she had never properly read him.
“I felt ashamed I hadn’t read his work! So I went on this search online—I love hunting for vintage books—and found a bunch of really cute books that are all his classics, but the actual physical books are so old and beautiful,” she says. “That’s all on my list.”
With her fall reading sorted, Jenner is also thinking about fall beauty. After returning to the deep brunette—essentially her natural shade— last year, she has begun making subtle changes.

“I’m slowly going a little bit more chocolatey, I’d say—a little bit lighter,” she says. And in terms of fall fashion? It’s all about scarves. (It seems like Jenner has been reading up on Vogue’s distillation of the season’s trends.) She is “obsessed” with them—like a fringed Maison Magdalena one she wears like a belt—and has already stocked up on some thinner versions for the coming season.
She’s feeling a little impatient, waiting for the weather to cooperate. “I can’t wait to wear a scarf again,” she says. On the glaringly sunny Venetian day of our conversation, Jenner fans herself. “It’s so hot today,” Jenner laughs. “Get me into some chilly weather.”
