Italy and Serbia complete the CEV EuroVolley podium in Istanbul

Turkiye triumphed as European champions and booked their spot at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games women’s volleyball event. On Sunday evening, at home in Istanbul, they outlasted reigning Olympic and world champions Italy in the CEV Trendyol EuroVolley 2026 final. Earlier in the day, Serbia beat Poland in the bronze medal game. All four of these teams will also compete at next year’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup in Canada and the United States – Italy as defending champions, Turkiye, Serbia and Poland as the three best placed teams of the European Championship.

In a rollercoaster gold medal showdown in front of well over 17 thousand fans in the stands of the Sinan Erdem hall in the Turkish megalopolis, the home team came back from a set down twice to celebrate a 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 12-25, 25-21, 15-10) victory over Italy and defend the historic first European crown they earned in 2023, adding the seventh medal to their EuroVolley collection.

At the last edition of the Olympic Games, Turkiye achieved their best result – fourth place at Paris 2024. Now they are heading to LA 2028 for their fourth Olympic appearance. Earlier this year, Turkiye also won the Volleyball Nations League.

Star opposites Melissa Vargas and Paola Egonu shared the top scorer honors of the final with 28 points each. Turkiye’s Vargas scored 26 in attack and two in blocking, while her counterpart put away two aces and four kill blocks.

For runners-up Italy, the EuroVolley medal collection now features three full sets of medals – three golds, three silvers and three bronzes.

In the third-place game, Serbia achieved a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 15-25, 25-18) victory over Poland and also shaped up three full sets of medals in their EuroVolley showcase. Serbia’s star opposite Tijana Boskovic beat Polish counterpart Magdalena Stysiak to the top of the match scorers’ chart by 29-28 in points.
