A couple of young people who thought it was okay to handle a gun inside a driverless car got Waymo than they bargained for recently in San Francisco.
One of the company’s autonomous robotaxis pulled itself over and alerted police after Waymo detected a firearm in the vehicle shortly before 4 a.m. on September 3.

Officers in the city’s Richmond District made a “high-risk vehicle stop,” authorities said, and detained two juvenile passengers. Police said a search turned up a loaded, AR-style rifle, mace spray, and “suspected marijuana.”
The San Francisco Police Department did not initially identify the company operating the vehicle, but Waymo later confirmed that one of its self-driving cars was involved.

“The company pulled the car over after detecting a violation of our terms of service involving a firearm,” a Waymo spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times. The company alerted emergency services and “cooperated fully” with police, the spokesperson said.

Both minor passengers—a boy and a girl—were arrested for illegal firearm possession and booked into San Francisco’s Juvenile Justice Center. Authorities did not release their names or exact ages. The investigation remains open.
