Thunderstorms to bring relief from summer heat cross Croatia

A weather change is set to reach Croatia at the start of the new week, bringing showers, thunderstorms and locally strong winds after a hot and sunny Sunday.

According to the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ), cloud cover will gradually increase from the north-west on Monday, with rain and thunderstorms expected to develop during the afternoon and evening.

The most significant weather disturbances are forecast for the northern Adriatic and Gorski Kotar, where locally heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms are possible.

In inland areas, moderate north and north-west winds are expected, with gusts potentially becoming strong for a time during thunderstorms. Along the Adriatic, light to moderate southerly winds will turn south-westerly around midday.

Despite the approaching instability, temperatures will remain relatively high. Morning temperatures are expected to range from 13 to 18°C inland, and between 20 and 24°C along the Adriatic. Daytime highs will generally reach 28 to 33°C.

DHMZ has issued a yellow weather warning for most of Croatia due to the possibility of heavy showers and thunderstorms, which could be accompanied by strong or storm-force wind gusts.

The Rijeka region is under a higher, orange warning.

DHMZ warns that stronger thunderstorms in the region could cause damage to property and trees, while flash flooding, storm-force winds and hail are also possible.

The weather conditions could also disrupt outdoor activities and traffic, with people advised to take precautions during periods of severe thunderstorms.

Croatia has had a spell of intense heat over the past couple of weeks with a number of new temperature records set.
