Summary
WWE SmackDown in Toronto delivered a dramatic Undisputed WWE Championship main event, with CM Punk defeating Kevin Owens before over 15,000 passionate fans. The intensely built rivalry culminated in a controversial finish as Sami Zayn, who lost his title to Punk and a title shot due to Owens, intervened. Zayn initially seemed to aid Owens, but then shockingly struck his friend with the WWE title belt, paving the way for Punk’s victory. The night also featured a tense confrontation between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton, who were warned against physical contact. Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga secured a tag team win, while Lash Legend defeated Tiffany Stratton, saved post-match by Chelsea Green.
CM Punk vs. Kevin Owens for the WWE Championship.
WWE
WWE SmackDown from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario Canada advertised quite possibly the most anticipated match of 2026. That distinction covers a lot of ground given this is the same year that has given us Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi, Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton, CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk.
CM Punk went on to defeat Kevin Owens with help from Sami Zayn, who clocked Owens with the WWE title belt.
CM Punk and Kevin Owens had less than three weeks to build up an otherwise dream match, and they made use of every second through two compelling promo segments on SmackDown that blurred the lines of reality and storyline like only a CM Punk feud can. Over 15,000 fans attended SmackDown Toronto in Owens’ home country of Canada to watch KO challenge his bitter rival CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Owens is a former world champion, though he held the Universal Championship and has yet to capture the WWE title like his best friend Sami Zayn—whom Punk beat for the WWE Championship last month.
CM Punk vs. Kevin Owens’ tilt tonight was likely to be the first of multiple matches between the two, with Sami added to the mix. Given the fact that the match is in Canada with an embittered Sami Zayn costing his best friend the match, Zayn may see another WWE world title opportunity. What improves the storytelling—therefore adding suspense to this main event—is that Sami Zayn was upset with both Punk and Owens.
Sami Zayn finally won the WWE Championship to punctuate a two-decade journey in pro wrestling, only to see it all come crashing down when Punk made a surprise return to beat Sami in Chicago after just nine days as champion. Zayn was given a reprieve, in the form of a singles match against Finn Balor for the right to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Instead, the match was turned into a Fatal 4-Way before the bell rang, and Zayn was upended by another surprise return in the form of Kevin Owens.
There are multiple scenarios where Zayn could screw over Punk, Owens, both or neither in the SmackDown main event. It’s all very impressive handiwork by WWE creative despite the over-complaining from fans and bots online. In the end, Sami took justice into his own hands by attacking both Punk and Owens to end SmackDown on a sour note in Scotiabank Arena.

Cody Rhodes And Randy Orton Face Off
- WWE SmackDown kicked off with Sami Zayn complaining to General Manager Nick Aldis about not being able to compete for the WWE Championship in his home country. Zayn was interrupted by Randy Orton, who was then interrupted by a furious Cody Rhodes already in the ring.
- Cody Rhodes called out Randy Orton, and Randy slowly walked into the arena, but Nick Aldis told them that if they lay a finger on one another, neither would be able to compete for the WWE Championship ever.
- Cody Rhodes vowed he would be the one to kill the legend of Randy Orton. “That’s not a prediction, it’s a spoiler.” WWE clearly wants fans to think Cody Rhodes is going heel and joining forces with Paul Heyman.
Tama Tonga And Talla Tonga Def. R-Truth And Damian Priest
- After the Tongans dominated early, R-Truth hit a spirited comeback as Ron Cena, getting 15,00+ Canadians to say “you can’t see me!”
- Talla and Tama Tonga isolated R-Truth, leading to a Red Cross on Truth and a victory in their rematch. A frustrated Damian Priest reentered the ring and hugged R-Truth. Surprisingly, there was no heel turn from Priest. Just frustration.
- Backstage, CM Punk said Kevin Owens has fought “one-sided beefs” for 20 years. Punk was interrupted by Randy Orton, who told Punk he would be coming for championship No. 15.

Blake Monroe Destroys Giulia In No Contest
- Cathy Kelly interviewed Blake Monroe backstage. Blake was struggling to find out which outfit to wear, and spoke ill of Toronto. Blake ultimately decided she was fine with her current outfit.
- Giulia made her way out to the ring only to be attacked by Blake. Blake Monroe hit an Arrivederci followed by a neutralizer as the match never got underway.
Baron Corbin Challenges Lil Yachty And Trick Williams
- Baron Corbin, referring to Baron Corbin as “cueball,” walked out to a tremendous reception. Trick Williams wants his belt back. Corbin rode out to the ring and declined Trick Williams’ offer. After more trash talk from Trick, Corbin agreed to a match against Trick Williams on Sunday Night’s Main Event, but only if Lil Yachty can last five minutes against Corbin.
- Backstage, Kevin Owens was interrupted by both Gunther and Finn Balor, who each have their eyes on the WWE Undisputed Championship.
Lash Legend Def. Tiffany Stratton
- Lash Legend targeted Tiffany Stratton’s injured ribs early and often as Wade Barrett called out her naivety in working hurt. Joe Tessitore felt it was bravery. Stratton countered Lash Legend with a hurricanrana followed by a stunner.
- Stratton scaled to the top rope but missed the Swanton Bomb. Stratton rolled up Lash in a crucifix for a nearfall. Lash put Stratton down with the Lash Extension for the win.
- After the match, the Irresistible Forces ganged up on Stratton, but Canada’s own Chelsea Green hit the ring and cleaned house with a kendo stick to a huge reaction.
- In a pre-taped vignette, Hiromu Takahashi—now known as Kyoki—made his debut alongside Shinsuke Nakamura. Takahashi referred to their tag team as Bakusai, which was trademarked by WWE in June.

CM Punk Def. Kevin Owens With Help From Sami Zayn
- Kevin Owens said “20 years, b—h,” during his entrance as the announce team talked up his bitterness toward Punk during that time period. Owens was cheered unanimously, while Punk received a mixed reaction in hostile territory. Punk wore a hockey mask and the stripes of the hapless Chicago Bears on his kickpads.
- CM Punk and Kevin Owens got into a brief fisticuff while Punk’s music was still playing, and the referee separated the two. Neither took their eyes off one another during the ring introductions. Punk was booed loudly in Toronto when he was introduced.
- Fans chanted “KO” and cheered when Kevin Owens was on offense, but booed CM Punk when he took over. Owens draped Punk over the top rope with a suplex as the action spilled to the outside. Punk set up the announce table, and the action returned to the ring where Punk countered a stunner with a neckbreaker.
- By the time SmackDown came back from break, there were dueling chants for Kevin Owens and CM Punk. Owens hit a picture-perfect Cannonball in the corner on CM Punk. Owens went to the top rope, but Punk rolled out of the target zone to a chorus of boos. Owens blasted Punk with a kick while outside the ring. Owens hit a Frog Splash through the announce desk on Punk and tossed him back into the ring. Owens hit a Swanton Bomb on Punk. Nearfall.
- There were chants of “holy s—t” and “this is awesome.” Punk escaped a pop-up powerbomb and pinned Owens for a count of two. “Y’all haven’t won anything since 1967!” screamed Punk at the Maple Leafs faithful. Now it was time for Punk to go to the top rope. Punk hit the DX taunt and hit a flying elbow. Punk transitioned into an Anaconda Vice, but Punk countered with a rollup for a nearfall. Fans booed the hell out of Punk as he pummeled Owens.
- Kevin Owens countered the GTS with a Sharpshooter on Punk. Punk escaped. KO went for a stunner on Punk, but Punk shoved Owens into referee Dan Engler for a ref bump. Punk turned the tables and shoved Owens into Engler, who bumped to the outside. Owens hit a stunner on Punk for a visual 13-count, but no referee to count it.
- Punk hit a GTS on Owens for a visual pinfall of his own. Enter Sami Zayn, who rammed Punk into the post. Sami tossed Punk back into the ring and Owens hit a stunner. Zayn sent Engler back into the ring for the nearest of nearfalls you will ever see. Half of the Scotiabank Arena was fooled by it.
- Sami slid the WWE Championship into the ring. A conflicted Owens picked up the belt but decided against using it. Owens handed the belt back to Sami, who clocked Owens with the belt. Punk hit the GTS on Owens for the win.
