Teofimo Lopez defeated Rolly Romero to win the WBA welterweight title on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The scorecards were crazy, but the right man won.

Teofimo Lopez def. Rolly Romero

That was a shocking set of scorecards. I’m not sure what Glen Feldman watched on Saturday. He scored the fight a draw. I didn’t think that fight was close. There were a lot of quiet rounds, but there’s no way Romero won six rounds.

Twelfth Round – Lopez 10-9 (Lopez 119-109)

That was tough to understand. Easy win and another world title for Lopez on my scorecard.

Eleventh Round – Lopez 10-9 (Lopez 109-100)

Romero is moving around the ring as if he’s up on the cards. This is boxing; Perhaps he knows something I don’t. Based on the fight I’ve watched, he’s down big and needs a KO in the final round.

Tenth Round – Lopez 10-9 (Lopez 99-91)

Romero seems to be resigned to allowing this fight to simply happen to him. It’s a bit frustrating to watch.

Ninth Round – Lopez 10-9 (Lopez 89-82)

This fight should be a lot closer than it is. Romero just doesn’t seem to be willing to do what it takes to win this fight.

Eighth Round – Lopez 10-9 (Lopez 79-73)

Lopez is easing his way to a victory here because Romero won’t take the necessary risks to make this his kind of fight.

Seventh Round – Lopez 10-9 (Lopez 69-64)

Unless the judges are seeing things differently, which is possible, Romero is digging himself too big of a hole. He needs to throw more punches. Right now, he’s getting outworked.

Sixth Round – Lopez 10-9 (Lopez 59-55)

Teofimo bounces back. He walks Romero down and lands the better shots as Romero reduced his aggression again.

Fifth Round – Romero 10-9 (Lopez 49-46)

Romero opened a huge gash over Lopez’s eye with a left hook and then nearly dropped him with a right hand. This was easily the most definitive round in favor of either fighter. The fight could be closer than I have it.

Fourth Round – Lopez 10-9 (Lopez 40-36, Lopez)

Lopez kind of coasting, but Romero is beginning to up his aggression.

Third Round – Lopez 10-9 (Lopez 30-27, Lopez)

Lopez is outworking Romero who seems overly cautious. He’s going to have to turn up the pressure.

Second Round – Lopez 10-9 (20-18, Lopez)

Romero is still getting Lopez’s respect, but Teofimo’s speed and dexterity are allowing him to land the more important punches.

First Round – Lopez 10-9

The first round was close, as I expected. Romero did solid work being first in the early action, but Lopez stole the round with two counter shots in the final 30 seconds.

Fighters are in the ring.

Yoenli Hernandez def. Daniel Veron

Hernandez seems to have the goods to become one of the best middleweights in the world. The Cuban has style and speed. Both were on display as Hernandez outpointed Veron over 10 rounds.

Gary Antonio Russell Drops and Decisions Victor Santillan

Santillan looked like he was in Las Vegas just to go 12 rounds. He accomplished that, but not much else. Russell outclassed him for 12 rounds, dropping him in the final frame before coasting to a lopsided unanimous decision victory.

Two things ride on this beyond the belt. It is Romero’s first defense of the WBA welterweight title, and it is Lopez’s first fight at 147 pounds.

Lopez has already named what comes next. He wants the winner here to meet the Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn winner in September, with undisputed at welterweight as the finish line.

Romero and Lopez will close out the night, but here is a look at the prelim and main card fights with results filled in as the fights end.
