The Airbus jets offer 16 more premium seats than the Boeing 757s they replace
The Polaris cabin on United’s new Airbus A321XLR sits in the first 10 rows of the single-aisle airplane, one seat on either side of the aisle, each closed off by a privacy door. Standing in it inside Hangar 54 at Newark Liberty on Tuesday, I noticed the seat angle before anything else. On a wide-body United plane, the odd-numbered window seats are the ones seasoned flyers hunt for, offering a seat closer to the window and further from the aisle. But on United’s new XLR plane, the suites face inward at roughly 49 degrees, putting passengers beside the window with their legs pointing toward the aisle.
The aircraft carries 32 premium seats in total (20 Polaris suites and 12 Premium Plus recliners), which United says is 16 more than the Boeing 757-200, the plane it replaces. The swanky new setup offers 4K OLED screens with built-in Bluetooth, free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, and a snack bar at the back. There’s even a dedicated spectacles holder—a touch I’ve never seen before and am particularly fond of.
Alongside the new aircraft, United announced 10 new international cities and three additional routes on Tuesday—the largest international network expansion in the company’s history, with the A321XLR carrying five of the new destinations. The list of places it will fly next summer starts with Ibiza, Valencia, and Marseille, meaning holiday destinations are getting the best cabin United has ever fitted to a single-aisle jet.

The new routes include destinations like Ibiza and Valencia, but many of them are only seasonal. In fact, eight of the 10 routes are seasonal, while the other two run year round: Luxembourg and Toulouse.
Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning, described Luxembourg as a business corridor with technology and banking ties and said corporate customers will save hours flying it nonstop. Toulouse has an even narrower rationale, with Airbus keeping its North American headquarters just outside Washington Dulles and its global headquarters in Toulouse, and United openly hoping those employees will fly between the two. It’s not the first time United has structured flights around a company, after previously launching a daily direct San Francisco to Chengdu, China route for Apple employees in 2025.
