AI Adoption Is Surging. Most Employees Still Aren’t Using It Well

Buying more AI licenses may be one of the easiest things a company can do right now. Getting employees to use them well is another matter entirely.

NROC Security recently analyzed 139,000 generative AI interactions across 4,800 business users for its GenAI Effectiveness 2Q 2026 report. Active AI use jumped from 19 percent in the first quarter to 31 percent in the second. Yet only about 5 percent of employees qualified as highly effective users under NROC’s methodology, which looks at frequency of use and prompting skill.

That creates a significant gap between AI adoption and AI capability. Companies can give thousands of employees access to powerful tools, but much of their potential remains concentrated among the relatively few people who know how to use them effectively. That gap is the opportunity.

Giving someone access to ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or another AI tool provides extraordinary capability. But capability without the confidence and skill to use it doesn’t automatically create value.

Then there’s another problem. The blank box.

Traditional business software increasingly teaches people how to use it. Templates, guided workflows, and tutorials walk users through what the software can do. AI changed that.
