Croatia U20 water polo team wins European Championship

Bulgaria – Croatia’s young water polo teams have completed an exceptional summer after the Croatia U20 men’s national team won the European Championship in Varna, defeating Spain in the final
The triumph marks Croatia’s third major gold medal in youth water polo this summer. The U18 side won the world title in Rio Maior, Portugal, while the U16 team claimed the world crown in Zagreb last week.
Coached by Zoran Bajić, Croatia overcame a strong Spanish start before turning the final around. Spain led 6-3 early in the second quarter, but Croatia fought back to level at 7-7 by half-time.
The young Barakude then moved in front during the third quarter and maintained their advantage in a tense finish. Croatia led 14-12 with three minutes remaining before Maro Šušić scored on a counter-attack following a successful defensive play with a player down, making it 15-12 and effectively securing the title.
Croatia had also produced important victories over Serbia, 14-13, in the quarter-finals, and Italy in the semi-finals on their way to the final.
Spain’s long-range shooting caused problems early in the match, but Croatia gradually took control. Goalkeeper Antoan Špilar played an important role during the second quarter, making six saves as Croatia recovered from the three-goal deficit.
Croatia’s Viktor Tončinić, 19, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, adding individual recognition to the team’s European success.
The gold medal completes a remarkable run for Croatian youth water polo, with three different men’s age-group teams reaching major finals this summer and winning all three.

In the bronze-medal match, Italy defeated Montenegro 15-13 on penalties.
The new European champions are due to return to Croatia on Monday.
