Domino’s Will Give You a Free Pizza, but Only If You Buy 1 Rival’s Meal First. That’s Not the Real Goal

Experts say the chain’s unusual promotion turns purchases from McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, and Chipotle into a much-needed tool.

Domino’s is giving customers a shot at a free personal Detroit-style pizza, but there’s a catch: They have to make a purchase from one of its biggest fast-food rivals first.
The chain has launched its “Is the Domino Worthy?” promotion, giving away up to $1 million worth of its new Domino pizza as it tries to position the menu item alongside established fast-food staples. To participate, customers need to purchase one of five well-known items: a McDonald’s Big Mac, a Burger King Whopper, a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme, a Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich, or a Chipotle burrito.
The promotion runs from August 31 through September
The promotion runs from August 31 through September 30 or until all available offers are claimed, whichever comes first.
This move comes on the heels of the company’s release of a new personal-sized, Detroit-style rectangular pizza shaped like the brand’s iconic logo, named “Domino.”

“The Domino was created for the way people eat today, where a meal doesn’t always mean sharing the same pizza,” Domino’s CMO Kate Trumbull said in a statement shared with Inc.
After making a purchase from one of the chain’s competitors, customers can upload their receipt to the promotion’s website, and Domino’s will send eligible participants an offer code for one free Domino, redeemable on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
While the strategy may seem unusual, industry experts say the logic makes sense.
