Wonder Bought Salt Hank’s to Scale 1 Viral Sandwich. Experts Say Its Cult Appeal Is Now at Risk

The company is increasingly acquiring founder-led brands with loyal followings. Can it maintain the hype surrounding them?

Wonder has added another beloved local restaurant to its roster.
This week, the ghost kitchen food hall announced it’s acquiring Salt Hank’s, the West Village sandwich shop that went viral for its French dip, a deal that hands over the physical restaurant, its branding, and its menu entirely to Wonder.
Starting this fall, Salt Hank’s French dip will be available for pickup and delivery through Wonder’s Upper East Side location, with additional city locations planned to follow.

Wonder’s strategy
Wonder increasingly appears to be evolving into a vertically integrated mealtime ecosystem—one that spans brand ownership, content, customer acquisition, loyalty, ordering, food production, and delivery all in one.
This isn’t the company’s first acquisition. Earlier this year, Wonder acquired NYC-based brand and East Village restaurant Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken.
“Bringing Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken into Wonder is an exciting step forward,” Marc Lore, founder and CEO of Wonder said at the time. “With an incredibly loyal following already in place, we can now scale this iconic brand across the Wonder platform to reach far more people.”
