The 8 Best Antioxidant Serums Are Your Insurance Against Future Skin Damage

Think of the best antioxidant serums as your insurance against future damage—they supplement your first line of defense (namely, sunscreen) in order to protect skin. These face serums can make a meaningful difference in maintaining healthy, youthful skin over the years, even if you don’t see their effects immediately. What makes them so impactful: “Every day, we’re exposed to things like UV radiation, pollution, and other environmental stressors that generate free radicals,” says Melanie Palm, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in La Jolla, California. “Those free radicals can over time contribute to pigmentation, collagen breakdown, and other signs of premature aging.”
Vogue’s Favorite Antioxidant Serums
- Best Overall:SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic, $185
- Best for Mature Skin:SkinMedica Vitamin C+E Complex, $106
- Best for Dry Skin:Allies of Skin Beta-Glucan & Resveratrol Advanced Hydrating Serum, $89
- Best for Early Signs of Aging:Revision D·E·J Daily Boosting Serum, $230
Like a superhero of sorts, topical antioxidants help neutralize some of those free radicals, effectively taking them out of commission before they can harm skin. While that doesn’t mean you can swap out your sunscreen for a vitamin C serum, they do work in tandem. And some antioxidant serums even go above and beyond mere protection. “Vitamin C, for example, is involved in collagen synthesis and can help address uneven pigmentation, so you’re getting both preventive and corrective benefits,” says Dr. Palm.
While you can find antioxidants in face moisturizers and even some sunscreens, they’re especially helpful in serums, which “are lightweight and can be formulated with relatively high concentrations of active ingredients without the heavier components you might find in a cream or a moisturizer,” Dr. Palm explains. With that, scroll ahead to find the antioxidant serums worth adding to your routine.
Best Overall: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic
CE Ferulic
- Why We Love It: Long considered the gold standard among antioxidant serums, SkinCeuticals both popularized and perfected the concept of combining antioxidants to maximize their reparative and protective abilities, pairing vitamin C with vitamin E and ferulic acid. Together, the formula is more stable—and thus more potent—than any ingredient on its own. And CE Ferulic recently underwent a reformulation that now includes carnosine (a peptide that doubles as an antioxidant) and endophytol (a botanical ingredient). “Carnosine and endophytol help address additional pathways of skin aging linked to environmental stress,” board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, previously shared with Vogue. They lend extra defense against external aggressors, helping skin become and remain firmer, brighter, and smoother over time.
- Key Ingredients: Vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, carnosine, endophytol
- Best For: All skin types, but especially those concerned with signs of aging
- Size: 30 ml
Best for Mature Skin: SkinMedica Vitamin C+E Complex
Vitamin C+E Complex
- Why We Love It: This face serum practically flies off the shelves, according to Jessica Wu, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles. “It combines two forms of vitamin C with vitamin E in a lightweight lotion,” she says. Those two forms of vitamin C—ascorbic acid, which is the pure water-soluble form, and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THD ascorbate), a stable, lipid-soluble version—work alongside two forms of vitamin E to deliver a steady, gradual release of antioxidants throughout the day. Together, they yield brighter skin and help to fade dark spots while providing lasting protection.
- Key Ingredients: Ascorbic acid, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, tocopherol, tocopherol acetate
- Best For: Aging skin or those with dark spots and discoloration
- Size: 30 ml
Best for Early Signs of Aging: Revision DEJ Daily Boosting Serum
DEJ Daily Boosting Serum
- Why We Love It: Dr. Palm is a fan of this serum for its thoughtful approach to antioxidants. “It combines THD ascorbate, which is a form of vitamin C, with resveratrol and other antioxidant ingredients, while also targeting visible photodamage and glycation,” she says. (Glycation is a natural process in skin through which sugars bind to collagen and elastin fibers, damaging them and leading to fine lines and skin laxity.) The “DEJ” in the name stands not for any ingredients, but rather the proteins in skin that the formula sets out to stimulate in order to leave it plump and smooth. “It’s a nice option for the patient who wants one sophisticated serum doing several jobs at once,” Dr. Palm says.
- Key Ingredients: Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, sunflower sprout extract, acetyl hexapeptide-1, squalane
- Best For: Anyone concerned with brightening or fine lines
- Size: 30 ml
Best for Sensitive Skin: Vanicream Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C Serum
- Why We Love It: For anyone with sensitive skin, this drugstore find is Dr. Wu’s first choice. “It’s a gentler, lipid-soluble form of vitamin C with ceramides,” she says, adding that it’s a good option for people experiencing skin changes during menopause. It has a silky feel and absorbs quickly, and pairs THD ascorbate with carnosine for an added antioxidant boost. And, as expected from Vanicream (which is known for its ultra-gentle formulas), the serum is fragrance-free and formulated without common allergens like dyes and lanolin.
- Key Ingredients: Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, ceramides, carnosine
- Best For: Sensitive skin types
- Size: 35 ml
Best for Dry Skin: Allies of Skin Beta-Glucan & Resveratrol Advanced Hydrating Serum
Beta-Glucan & Resveratrol Advanced Hydrating Serum
- Why We Love It: If you don’t want to sacrifice hydration for antioxidants, you’re in luck: This hydrating serum offers the best of both worlds. It “delivers deep hydration and barrier support with beta-glucan and ceramides, while resveratrol, carnosine, and green tea antioxidants defend against oxidative stress, irritation, and visible aging,” board-certified dermatologist Mamina Turegano, MD, previously told Vogue. That allows it to plump, calm, and protect skin in one fell swoop. And it has a creamier feel than your average serum, so it may even double as a moisturizer for some.
- Key Ingredients: Beta glucan, ceramides, resveratrol, hyaluronic acid acid, green tea leaf extract
- Best For: For all skin types, but especially those with very dry skin
- Size: 30 ml
Best for Dark Spots: Arencia Vitamin C Booster Shot
Vitamin C Booster Shot
- Why We Love It: Vitamin C is in the name, but what sets Arencia’s antioxidant serum apart is the inclusion of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant in its own right that works alongside with vitamin C to brighten and firm skin. Lest that sound intense, the K-beauty serum also contains niacinamide and allantoin—known for their soothing, anti-inflammatory properties—to minimize any risk of irritation. The versatile formula also doubles as an eye treatment, you can also use it to address dark circles.
- Key Ingredients: Glycerin, niacinamide, allantoin, ascorbic acid (10ppm), glutathione, panthenol, tocopherol
- Best For: People with dark spots or redness
- Size: 30 ml
Best Budget: The Ordinary Multi-Antioxidant Radiance Serum
Multi-Antioxidant Radiance Serum
- Why We Love It: The Ordinary is known for spotlighting stand-alone ingredients, but this formula veers from that blueprint by pairing a water-soluble form of vitamin C (ascorbyl glucoside) with epigallocatechin gallate, a potent antioxidant found in green tea, and ergothioneine, yet another antioxidant that helps defend against external aggressors. The robust blend provides skin with comprehensive protection against environmental stressors, like sunlight and pollution—so it stays brighter, calmer, and smoother.
- Key Ingredients: Ascorbyl glucoside, epigallocatechin gallate, ginseng extract, ergothioneine
- Best For: All skin types
- Size: 30 ml
Best for Wrinkles: Tata Harper Elixir Vitae Serum
Elixir Vitae Serum
- Why We Love It: Rather than assemble a few antioxidants and call it a day, this face serum harnesses not one, not three, but 11 sources of antioxidants—among them prickly pear, sacha inchi, and green tea seed oils as well as açai oil. Other ingredients in the botanically derived formula, such as narcissus bulb and algae extract, target the deeper wrinkles that can be difficult to treat even with injectables. It’s a hydrating serum in its own right, too, delivering an immediate plumping effect to dry or dehydrated skin.
- Key Ingredients: Kelp polymers, narcissus bulb, rose-hip seed oil, sacha inchi seed oil, prickly pear seed oil, green tea seed oil, açai oil
- Best For: People with deep wrinkles or severe skin laxity
- Size: 30 ml
Everything You Need to Know
Do antioxidant serums really work?
Antioxidant serums work to repair and protect skin from everyday damage. “UV light, pollution, smoke, and even normal metabolism create free radicals,” says Dr. Wu. “These are compounds that are caused by oxidation and can damage skin cells, collagen, and elastin and contribute to uneven pigment.”
Applied topically to skin, antioxidants help interrupt this oxidation reaction, halting the process in its tracks. That said, they’re not a substitute for your daily sunscreen. But “once you’ve covered that base, I think a well-formulated antioxidant is one of the most worthwhile additions for most adults,” says Dr. Palm, who recommends them for patients who’ve had a lot of sun exposure, who have discoloration or dullness, or who simply want to be proactive about aging: “We are all encountering UV and environmental oxidative stress, whether we see it happening or not.”
The Benefits of Antioxidants for Skin
Antioxidants interrupt the oxidative damage that can stem from environmental aggressors; in doing so, they can help you maintain collagen and elastin, as well as brighter, more even-toned skin. And while all antioxidants generally do this—it’s in the name, after all—some go above and beyond that role. Take vitamin C. “I tell my patients it’s like an antioxidant shield to protect your skin against free radicals including pollution,” says Dr. Wu. “It helps neutralize free radicals, supports collagen, and can improve discoloration.”
Vitamin C is also the gold standard for Dr. Palm as well, although she prefers a multifaceted approach. “I also really like combinations rather than looking for one ‘hero’ antioxidant in isolation,” she says. “Research has shown that ferulic acid can improve the stability of vitamins C and E and enhance their photoprotective effects. That synergy is one reason antioxidant cocktails can be so effective.”
What are the signs of antioxidant deficiency in skin?
It’s not really possible to be “deficient” in antioxidants in your skin the way you might be with vitamin D or iron—and no such diagnosis exists. For instance, “a true vitamin C deficiency is a systemic medical condition, not limited to the skin,” says Dr. Wu. (Case in point? Scurvy.)
However, if you’re wondering whether you should add an antioxidant serum to your routine, the answer may be easy to find: Dr. Palm points to uneven pigmentation, fine lines, loss of elasticity, and other signs of sun damage as cumulative effects of oxidative stress from the environment. “Those changes don’t mean someone’s skin is deficient in antioxidants specifically, but they are some of the reasons antioxidants can be useful in a skin-care routine,” she says.
Keep in mind that you won’t see results overnight once you add an antioxidant serum; when it comes to environmental damage, you’re ultimately playing the long game. “Much of the value here is preventative, which is why consistency matters,” says Dr. Palm. With a good one in hand, however, you can rest easy knowing that your skin is prepared and protected for whatever comes your way.
