Extreme biohacker Bryan Johnson knows he isn’t popular. But even the tech entrepreneur and longevity enthusiast seemed surprised at the world’s reaction after he announced in July he had been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition.

“People really want me to die. Now, I get it: It’s funny, it’s ironic. I push a lot of buttons that people don’t like,” Johnson said.

Johnson originally made a name for himself as a serial entrepreneur. He founded and sold fintech company Braintree to PayPal for $800 million in 2013 prior to founding neurotech company Kernel and VC firm OS Fund. But he’s become better known in recent years for his claims that he can achieve immortality, not only for himself but for all of humanity—and in little over a decade, Fortune reported.
