Entrepreneur and investor Alexis Ohanian recently appeared on The Martha Stewart Podcast to share his insights on the current state of the internet. 

Last year, the Reddit co-founder made headlines for his comments about the viral “dead internet” theory on theTBPNpodcast. The theory refers to the concept that much of the internet is becoming increasingly overtaken by bots and generated content.

During the podcast, he told Stewart the internet is in an “interesting place now” compared to when he built Reddit alongside Steve Huffman 21 years ago.

“So much of our content that we consume is fake—I think there’s going to be some next wave of social-coming in the next few years, that is it is verifiably human without being creepy,” Ohanian said. 

He added that it will become increasingly clear

He added that it will “become increasingly clear that so much of what we see online that is supposed to be of-the-people is fake.” 

People have increasingly relied on chatbots for a range of uses, including as a search engine. According to Pew Research, about four in 10 U.S. adults report having used chatbots to search for information. About a quarter say they chatbots daily. Overall, the number of Americans who use LLMs has skyrocketed since 2023.
