Dolly Parton may have been a country music legend, but she was also a savvy businesswoman and entrepreneur. Her catalogue, which she retained the publishing rights to, was worth $120 million—but her total net worth was nearly four times that, at an estimated $450 million.

Where did all that additional wealth come from? It’s in large part because Parton, who passed away earlier this week at age 80, had an acute sense of her own brand—and a willingness to monetize it across various product lines and corporate partnerships.

Here’s how the late Parton, of “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You” fame, became nearly as big of a commercial powerhouse as she was a musical artist.

A hometown theme park

Certainly the best-known of Parton’s various side-hustles was Dollywood, her eponymous theme park, which she launched right outside her native Sevierville, Tennessee in nearby Pigeon Forge.

Right at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains, Dollywood turned Parton’s iconic personality and aesthetic into a must-see location that could draw tourists nationwide (and offered plenty of opportunities for merch sales and other commerce once they got there). The theme park made an estimated $180 million to $580 million a year, with Parton’s 50 percent stake worth an estimated $165 million—which is to say, more than her actual discography itself.

Ironically, Parton had something of a love/hate relationship with the venue: in 2019, she told the New York Times that she never rode the rides there, explaining, “I have a tendency to get motion sickness. Also, I’m a little bit chicken.”

Dolly goes retail

Parton also built an impressive retail empire out of the various branded products she launched throughout her career.
