Istria’s grape harvest starts early as heat and drought speed ripening

19 August 2026 (Hina) – This year’s grape harvest in Istria has begun earlier than in the past, with high temperatures and dry conditions accelerating the ripening of grapes
The harvest started at the beginning of last week, a timing that has become increasingly common in recent years. Winemakers expect good grape quality, although it is still too early to assess final yields or determine whether the harvest will affect wine prices.
Luka Rossi, president of Vinistra, an association representing more than 120 grape growers and winemakers from Istria and the Kvarner region, said the decision to begin harvesting is based primarily on the condition and maturity of the grapes rather than the calendar.
Growers monitor the balance between sugar and acidity, while the timing also depends on the vineyard’s location, variety and local weather conditions.
Earlier-ripening varieties and grapes intended for sparkling wine are harvested first, including Malvasia. Muscat and other white varieties follow, while red varieties such as Teran and Merlot generally ripen later.
Rossi said the hot, dry weather had accelerated ripening and helped reduce problems with vine diseases, particularly powdery mildew. From a plant-health perspective, the situation is currently better than last year.
The main concern is drought. If dry conditions continue, a lack of water could slow the vine’s physiological development. Rainfall has also been unevenly distributed across Istria, meaning some vineyards are in very good condition while others are experiencing water shortages.
Vineyards with access to irrigation currently have an advantage.
Rossi expects yields to be somewhat lower because of the drought, but said it remains too early to provide a precise estimate. He expects overall grape quality to be good.
The final impact on Istrian wine prices will also depend on the eventual yields, grape quality and production costs, with Vinistra stressing that an earlier harvest does not automatically mean higher prices.
