Commuters in one wealthy Silicon Valley city can now book a rideshare trip for less than the price of a pumpkin spice latte.
Sunnyvale, California, has launched Sunnyvale Beam, an on-demand car service that charges a flat rate of $3.50 for trips anywhere within city limits, covering roughly 23 square miles.
A reduced rate of $1.75 is available
A reduced rate of $1.75 is available to seniors 65 and older, youths aged 13–18, people with disabilities, and low-income residents. Additional passengers pay $1 each.
The first three rides are free for all users.

“We are thrilled to launch the Sunnyvale Beam rideshare service that will complement our existing transit network and give people in our community more freedom and independence for their everyday trips,” said Jennifer Garnett, Sunnyvale’s chief public information officer.
Operated in conjunction with Sunnyvale Beam is 50 percent funded by a $4.2 million state grant that covers roughly half of the program’s cost, SFGate reported. The city will pay for the other half over the next five years
Drivers will be paid $23 to $25 an hour.
