When Kylie Jenner was looking for her summer mani, she only had one color in mind: a bright summer red. After swatching a few different shades with her go-to nail artist Zola Ganzorigt, they ultimately picked OPI’s A Red-vival City. And thus this summer’s hottest mani shade was crowned: the tomato nail. It’s been a tomato girl summer for the past couple of years. What started out as a vibe to channel your idyllic Italian vacation has now manifested into the rich, red-orange hue taking over the runways, and blush and lip palettes everywhere.
(And who could forget all the tomatogirlgirl scents?). It was only a matter of time before tomato red became everyone’s go-to nail color. Jenner, Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber, and more, everyone is wearing the shade. “It’s so vibrant, bright, and fun,” Ganzorigt tells Vogue. “Tomatoes are also a classic summer fruit, so the color naturally brings to mind that feeling of summer, enjoying the nice weather and embracing the season.
It’s perfect for summer.”
“Tomatoes are in season and delicious,” celebrity nail artist Sonya Meesh agrees. “It’s a warm vibrant red that looks amazing across all skin tones.”
Kylie’s tomato red of choice, OPI’s A Red-Vival City, is what Ganzorigt says is the perfect tomato nail shade. “It has that vibrant juicy quality that really captures the color of a perfectly ripe tomato,” she says.
There are plenty of other red hues you
But there are plenty of other red hues you can turn to. Meesh says you can never go wrong with a Chanel red (“They really have perfected every shade of red you’d ever need,” they say) and recommends the Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour in 147 Incendaire. For a trusted polish that is pretty chip-resistant, you can also turn to something like Essie’s Gel Couture in Electric Geometric.
For something a bit richer, consider something with a hint of blue undertones—like the mani pro artist Tom Bachik created for Gomez’s “Sunset Blvd” music video. Or go quite literal—and still just as fabulous—with Hello Tomato’s Tomato. To keep your tomato mani bright and shiny, you’ll want to have the right nail prep with a good base coat and sealing it off with a top coat.
You’ll also want to be mindful of everyday habits that might cause polish to chip prematurely. “It’s so important to properly prep the base to achieve a long-lasting manicure,” says Ganzorigt. “To maintain your manicure, using cuticle oil regularly helps it look fresh.”
“I can’t stress enough how important prep and lifestyle affect the longevity of your manicure,” Meesh adds.

“You can have the best prep in the world, but if you’re constantly washing dishes, and being rough and working with your hands, your manicure will not last.”
As for the best shape for your tomato red nail, take another cue from Jenner. Ganzoright says that Jenner wanted to go short with her mani, so they went with a soft square shape to match. “It’s the most flattering,” says Ganzoright.
“[It] gives the nails a clean, polished look while feeling natural.”
So even if you weren’t able to live out your la dolce vita dreams along the Amalfi coast this summer, you can still channel that same care-free vibe wherever you are. All thanks to a bottle of fun tomato red polish.
