Zoë Kravitz Experiments in a Long Misunderstood Denim Style

Zoë Kravitz knows good bottoms. Whether it’s The Row’s flowing Gala pants, Cou Cou Intimates bermudas, or the no-waistband style Still Here low-rider jeans, Kravitz has a regular rotation of contemporary classics that act as the foundation of her wardrobe. Now engaged to partner Harry Styles, the actor and her pop star husband-to-be have established they have a similar taste in denim: relaxed, usually straight-leg, deep blue.

Now back in New York before Styles takes on his mammoth 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden, Kravitz is experimented in a long maligned denim silhouette—one that Styles probably wouldn’t be up for incorporating into their coordinating couple style. Namely, a pair of light-wash blue cropped and kick flare jeans that sat ultra low on the waist. Photographed running errands around the Lower East Side, Kravitz styled her jeans with a classic white cropped t-shirt, The Row’s Awar heeled suede ballerina pumps, and oversized Thistles Atlas sunglasses.

On her arm, she toted a glossy black leather Saint Laurent Hortense hobo bag which features a gold-tone Cassandre ring detail, and for jewelry, she opted for her favorite Jessica McCormack drop earrings and engagement ring. Her waist-length hair was styled in tiny braids, half-up, half-down. Now, the humble kick flare can get a bit of a bad rep: it can look overly retro and can be hard to style without looking bottom heavy.

With the ongoing ’90s revival, though, think of the cropped flare jean in the context of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Winona Ryder back in the day. Brands like Isabel Marant have stayed true to the silhouette over the years, while Toteme, Frame, and Ralph Lauren offer modern takes. Worn with minimal loafers or a ballet pump, the negative space from foot to ankle is made elegant.

Kravitz’s low-rise style make it feel even more of the moment. The kick flare jean is an intentional silhouette, and fits neatly into a season-traversing, pluralistic denim wardrobe. When Zoë Kravitz and Harry Styles finally made their coupledom official, they did so in denim. Often, for them both, that’s the entire look: adding simple but well made tees and knitwear, loafers, oversized sunglasses, and an iced coffee.

(All but one of those are powered by The Row.) Across the warmer months, they’d swapped out denim for matching sporty shorts. Just a few days previous, the couple were photographed arriving at JFK airport: Styles in a suit, Kravitz in her trusty Gala pants. Firmly back in New York for the foreseeable, and as temperatures drop, expect to see more of Kravitz out and about, layering up and dressing up for the fall that soon comes.

As a disciple of The Row and an expert in layers and textures, this is when Kravitz will be at the height of her fashion powers.
