I’ve Studied Personality for Years. Here’s the 1 Thing Everybody Gets Wrong

As an emotional intelligence coach and author, I’ve partnered with neuroscientists and psychologists for years to study the subject of personality. Understanding your personality, what I call “getting to know yourself,” is the foundation of self-awareness, the first of the four abilities of emotional intelligence.

When teaching clients how to build self-awareness I prefer to use the Five Factor Model of personality, more commonly known as the Big Five (or, the OCEAN model). The Big Five is the model most widely recognized by scientists and researchers across the globe, and it identifies five major traits of personality, as follows:

Openness: your openness to new experiences. Higher openness tends towards wanting to try new things and to experience variety; lower openness tends towards wanting the routine and familiar.

Conscientiousness: your attitude towards work, structure, and organization

Conscientiousness: your attitude towards work, structure, and organization. Higher conscientiousness tends toward high structure and organization, along with adherence to deadlines. Lower conscientiousness tends towards less structure, more flexibility, and putting other priorities on the same level as work.

Extraversion: where you get your energy. Higher extraversion tends towards getting energy from others; lower extraversion (introversion) tends towards getting energy from being alone.

Agreeableness: how you approach relationships with others. Higher agreeableness tends towards prioritizing social harmony over disagreement; lower agreeableness tends towards prioritizing what you think is “right,” even if others disagree with you.

Neuroticism: your tendency towards negative emotion. Higher neuroticism indicates a tendency to experience negative emotions; lower neuroticism tends away from that.
