Jennifer Lawrence loves a seasonal hair switch-up. Last fall, she debuted a feathery Jane Birkin-style fringe (a trend quickly dubbed Birkin bangs), and in early spring of this year, rocked a more wispy set of front pieces we’ve come to know as “U bangs.” Styled with her long and flowing blonde waves or sculpted into an elegant up-do, J-Law knows that some well placed bangs can totally transform a look.
Yesterday, the actor revealed another new look just in time for the approaching autumn: what her hairstylist Chris Appleton described on his Instagram as “butterfly bangs.” It’s the first time that Appleton—who crafted Martha Stewart’s rose gold color this summer and has styled everyone from Kim Kardashian to Drew Barrymore and Ariana Grande—has worked with Lawrence.
Lawrence appeared as a presenter at the LVMH prize ceremony, which took place at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. Her signature, almost waist-length blonde hair was styled in lightly tousled waves that accentuated her multi-dimensional blonde color. Her new bangs start at the cheekbone, moving upwards to lightly skim her eyebrows, staying voluminous and textured without looking heavy or dense.
As Appleton outlined in a comment on Instagram, it’s “shorter and airy in the center, winging out at the cheekbones for lift and movement rather than a traditional fringe.”
Her makeup, by Shayna Gold (who often works with Lawrence), focused on a gently dewy base with a warm coral blush, softly diffused nude lip, and carefully lined brown smoky eye. As a Dior ambassador, of course she wore a custom suit by Dior CD Jonathan Anderson too: a tailored black buttoned up bar jacket with fitted pants and the house’s boxy Cigale bag.
Butterfly bangs are a more lithe evolution of the classic curtain bangs, bringing in some light ’90s-style movement. Because of its softness, it’s pretty versatile on most face shapes. And despite its delicate shape, it still provides structure and youthful movement. It’s both easy to grow out naturally or maintain with semi-regular trimming. If you’re considering a new look for fall, consider the Jennifer Lawrence catch-all and call in the butterfly bangs.
