Nextpower founder and CEO Dan Shugar recently appeared on CNBC’s Mad Money to discuss a transformation a decade in the making. The company, formerly Nextracker, rebranded in 2025 to reflect its expansion from solar “trackers” (that allowed solar panels to follow the sun) into a fully integrated power plant technology platform.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with Nextpower’s executive team for nearly a decade. Everything Shugar discussed on CNBC reflects the company’s public record, so I’m not sharing anything proprietary here. But the company’s story is a textbook example of how business model and platform innovation works in today’s world.

Here are the lessons to be learned

Here are the lessons to be learned from Nextpower’s success, and what any leader who wants real innovation and growth can apply from their story.

Your Best Product Is the Springboard for a Bigger Solution

Every great product eventually faces the same evolution.

The daily digest for entrepreneurs and business leaders

Market leadership in a single category invites competition, drives down prices, and erodes the original advantage. Nextracker was the global solar tracker market leader, shipping more hardware than any other company in the category. That single product success created the customer engagement and trust required to attempt something much bigger.

In the past year, Nextpower has made acquisitions that added power electronics, inverters, battery storage, and robots that inspect solar power plants to its portfolio. Its integrated solution has left the competition flat footed. Most customers want complete solutions where everything just works together in a way that produces the most energy possible. Just think Apple iOS but for large scale industrial power plants.

And it just so happens that this infrastructure is increasingly becoming a critical success factor for data centers, where electricity demand from AI is accelerating faster than traditional grid expansion can keep pace – and turnkey solar power plants are a solid solution.
