Dall-E GPT Shuts Down August 30—Download Your Images Before The Official Tool Disappears Tomorrow

OpenAI is continuing its effort to streamline the ChatGPT experience by retiring its image-generation model, DALL-E GPT, on August 30 and replacing it with ChatGPT Images across all subscription tiers. The change, which was announced in OpenAI’s release notes on July 31, marks the end of a tool that helped introduce AI-generated art and image creation. Users who want to continue generating or editing images will still be able to do so through ChatGPT Images, which has become OpenAI’s primary image-generation platform.
DALL-E first debuted in January 2021. At the time, the technology attracted widespread attention for its ability to create original illustrations from simple text descriptions. OpenAI continued to improve the model through updates released in 2022 and 2023, increasing image quality, prompt accuracy, and creative capabilities. DALL-E became one of the company’s most recognizable products, helping to fuel public interest in generative AI.
Why End Dall-E?
Despite its popularity, OpenAI has increasingly shifted its focus toward integrating capabilities directly into ChatGPT instead of maintaining separate tools. ChatGPT Images reflects that strategy, combining image generation and editing into the broader ChatGPT interface. The newer system offers more advanced editing features and tighter integration with other ChatGPT functions, allowing users to move seamlessly between text, images, and other forms of content creation.
In its announcement, OpenAI emphasized that the retirement applies only to the official DALL-E GPT experience. “User-created GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected,” the company noted. That means custom GPTs built by users or organizations can continue using image-generation capabilities even after the official DALL-E GPT is removed.

What User Should Do
OpenAI is encouraging users to download any images they want to preserve before the August 30 deadline. However, the company has not explicitly stated what will happen to images stored within DALL-E GPT conversations once the service is retired. As a result, users who rely on the tool for artwork, design concepts, or other creative projects may want to back up their files proactively rather than risk losing access later.
The shutdown is part of a broader cleanup effort that OpenAI has undertaken throughout the year. Earlier in 2026, the company retired the DALL-E API for developers, further signaling its move away from standalone DALL-E products. OpenAI has also discontinued or phased out several other offerings as it focuses resources on its core platforms. The o3 model inside ChatGPT was retired on August 26. Meanwhile the company’s experimental browser initiative project, ChatGPT Atlas was shut down on August 9, and Sora 2, its video-generation system, is scheduled for full shutdown on September 24.
Taken together, these changes suggest OpenAI is consolidating its expanding lineup of AI tools into a smaller number of flagship products. Rather than offering separate experiences for images, text, browsing, and video generation, the company appears focused on making ChatGPT the central hub for all of those capabilities. The retirement of DALL-E GPT represents another step in that strategy, closing the chapter on one of OpenAI’s pioneering products while signaling where the company believes the future of AI creation is headed.
