The Middle East recorded by far the largest decline during the first half of 2026, with passenger traffic falling 21% as conflict, airspace restrictions and schedule disruption affected airlines and airports across the region.

The fall is particularly striking because the Middle East had been one of aefit from connecting passengers travelling between Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, meaning regional disruption can have effects far beyond passengers whose journey starts or ends there

North America Is Also Struggling to Grow

North American airport traffic was broadly flat during the first half of 2026, continuing weakness that was already visible last year. The region was the only one to record a passenger decline in 2025, slipping 0.7% even as the global total reached a record.

Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean continued to grow in early 2026, helping prevent the global market from moving into an outright decline.

2025 Had Looked Much Stronger

The contrast with 2025 is substantial. Africa recorded the strongest regional passenger growth last year at 9%, followed by the Middle East at 6.5%, Asia-Pacific at 5.1%, Latin America and the Caribbean at 4.5%, and Europe at 4.2%.
