For years, technical experts had one clear edge: they knew what others didn’t. AI is changing that.

Artificial intelligence can now explain technical concepts, summarize research, compare options, and generate possible solutions in seconds. That does not make technical expertise less valuable. It changes where the value lies. 

Knowing the answer is no longer enough. Technical professionals increasingly need to help people understand what matters, evaluate tradeoffs, make decisions, and act. 

I recently discussed this shift with negotiation expert Peter Stark, who has coached senior leaders across industries and works closely with technology executives. His observations point to a problem many STEM organizations underestimate: decision friction.
