Why Everyone Should Be Vibe

If you really think about it, most of us have many more problems than we think that could be solved with simple software. Maybe there’s a work routine you do every day that could be made easier, or something you use that just doesn’t quite fit the way your brain works. My recommendation is that the next time you come across a problem like this, you should vibe-code the solution to your problem.

I’m sure you’ve heard people talk about vibe-coding, but just in case you’re unfamiliar, it’s just using AI to write software by describing what you want it to do, instead of writing the code yourself. You tell Claude Code or Codex what you’re trying to build, and it generates the code.

To be fair, you definitely have to know

To be fair, you definitely have to know what you want. You also have to be willing to think through how things should work because the AI has no idea how humans use software. It also makes lots of mistakes, and building anything complicated still requires a lot of patience and lots of revisions. But the fact that someone who doesn’t know how to write software can build something that actually works is truly remarkable and one of the most useful things about AI.

Look, I know this take is controversial. Some of you are adamantly opposed to vibe-coding. A lot of people are opposed to AI in general. That’s a totally reasonable position to have, and I respect that. You should probably not bother with the rest of this column, however, because I mean it when I say that you should definitely think about how you can use AI to solve certain problems you experience every day, and it’s probably going to make you mad, so I’m trying to do us both a favor and encourage you to find some other way to spend the next five minutes.

Part of the problem is that Silicon Valley seems to believe that every problem in the world can be solved with software. And, if we’re really honest, there’s more than a little irony to that, considering how many of the problems we face today are the direct result of many of the products they make.

Companies like Meta and OpenAI seem convinced

Companies like Meta and OpenAI seem convinced that the solution to just about everything involves more technology, more AI, and more time spent interacting with software. I don’t agree. In fact, a lot of problems we face would be best solved without any technology. If you’re having a problem getting your 12-year-old to stop playing Minecraft, you do not need more software. You probably need to spend some non-digital quality time with your kid.

On the other hand, there are real problems that are actually best solved with software. And, thanks to AI, it’s never been easier to do it by yourself.
